Gluten-Free? I bet you're tired of hearing these 10 things
If there’s one thing everyone with celiac can agree on, it’s that we hear some pretty crazy stuff when others find out we can’t eat gluten. While most people are kind and try to understand, some are not. I’ve compiled a list of some of the things I’ve heard the most since being diagnosed.
All celiacs are tired of hearing these 10 things:
Can’t you just have one bite?
I mean I guess, if I want to be sick for several weeks. A crumb is enough to damage my intestines for months.
Does gluten free mean organic?
If I had celiac, I would be sick all the time. I would never stop eating gluten.
Good for you! I bet you would keep eating peanuts if you had a nut allergy too, right?
What happens when you eat gluten?
A couple things. First, I barely know you. Second, we’re at dinner. Third, Google it.
Can you drink alcohol?
Most, yes! But that’s a broad question.
How about beer?
No beer! Most beer is made from barley. Unless it’s a special gluten-free beer, like Glutenberg.
I’m so tired of this gluten-free fad!
Nice, so it’s not a fad. I have celiac disease, an autoimmune disease. The only treatment for celiac is a life-long gluten free diet. When someone with celiac consumes gluten, it damages their small intestine and destroys the villi. If you are undiagnosed, you are at risk for several long-term health complications including anemia, certain cancers, osteoporosis, infertility…
Are you sure you can eat that?
I think I’m capable of understanding what I can and cannot eat. But, thanks for looking out for me!
So, what do you eat?
Lots of things, as long as they don’t have wheat, rye, barley or oats. What do you eat?
Don’t you ever just want some pizza?
Like, with gluten in it? No, never. I know how it makes me feel. But, there’s a gluten-free alternative to everything now! For pizza? Blaze.
